Geschichte
Nach antiker Tradition fand bei Pharan, das man mit dem biblischen Rephidim identifizierte, die in Exodus 17,10β15 erwΓ€hnte Schlacht zwischen dem israelischen Volk und den den Durchzug sperrenden Amalekitern statt. Nach MΓΌnzfunden lΓ€sst sich die Besiedlung bis in das 1. Jahrhundert v. Chr. zurΓΌckverfolgen. Sie verlief damit parallel zur nabatΓ€ischen Einwanderung in PalΓ€stina, womit die Pharaniten als ein Bruderstamm der NabatΓ€er angesehen werden dΓΌrfen. Um die Mitte des 4. Jahrhunderts wurde die BevΓΆlkerung der Stadt christianisiert, am Ende desselben Jahrhunderts erklΓ€rte man die Stadt zum Bischofssitz. In den zwei oder drei Generationen nach der islamischen Eroberung der Sinai-Halbinsel 639 gaben die Bewohner die Stadt Pharan auf und wurden vermutlich Nomaden. Mit der Absetzung des letzten ΓΆkumenischen Bischofs infolge des Dritten Konzils von Konstantinopel ging die BischofswΓΌrde 681 an den Abt des Katharinenklosters ΓΌber, der sie bis heute innehat. Das Bistum wurde mit dem benachbarten Bischofssitz Raithu zum Erzbistum vom Berge Sinai vereinigt, das die gesamte Sinai-Halbinsel umfasst.cite-ref-roberson-1-0[1] In der lateinischen Kirche wurde das Bistum 1933 als Titularbistum Pharan der rΓΆmisch-katholischen Kirche wiedererrichtet.cite-ref-2[2]
